Having gained popularity since their debut, many of the members of this group have been famous even since before their debut, one of them being the main vocal of the group, Cho Mi-yeon. The singer, who was born in 1997, was known to show a strong interest in singing since she was a child. She auditioned for YG Entertainment during middle school, and passed. Pre-debut Story
Before making their debut, YG Entertainment, which oversees BLACKPINK, announced that BLACKPINK would debut as a four-member girl group. One source from YG Entertainment said that the group was originally planned to have nine members, but had been reduced to the current four members, “There were originally nine members, but Yang Hyun Suk suddenly changed the plan two years ago to debut four members first. Although we don’t know exactly what he is thinking, the remaining five trainees are still at YG, and BLACKPINK is thinking of as an advance party, in a sense, back at the company. ” ㅡ YG Affiliate One of the members who almost debuted with BLACKPINK was the trainee named Cho Mi-yeon, who has since debuted as a member of (G) I-IDLE in 2018, under CUBE Entertainment. Debut with (G)-IDLE
Cho Mi-yeon debuted as a member of (G) I-DLE on May 2, 2018, with the lead single ‘Latata’. The music video for ‘Latata’ exceeded 5.9 million views within the first week. It became a hit, and (G) I-DLE received their first-ever music show win on SBS MTV’s The Show on May 22, twenty days after their debut. In an interview with The Star, the leader of the group, Jeon So-yeon, revealed that the name “Idle” came to her when she was composing the Idle Song. She sent it to the company, and the name was finalized after going through the company’s competition. The group was thus renamed (G)I-DLE, with the “I” standing for individuality, the “-” to show that the name has been divided into two parts, and “Dle” as the plural form of “I” in Korean, meaning a group of six different personalities gathered together. (G)I-DLE has been praised for their musicality and ambiguity. Natalie Morin from Refinery29 described them as individuals with different energies that complement each other. She also described them as “bold and sensual,” characteristics which she asserts sets them apart from other K-pop girl groups. Mor.bo named them as a diverse group that is unafraid to try different music styles. Elle magazine named the group as “independent musicians and artists” in an arena where girl groups’ concepts typically work within a mold that was made by someone else.
